7th Annual Mardi Gras Event | Claudia Lewis Photography | Portrait Photographer in Haymarket VA

I recently had the opportunity to volunteer my time to help The Renaissance Montessori School. When Vanessa Mosher contacted me to photograph students from the school in order to create art work for their annual fundraiser, I couldn't be more pleased! I am a former school teacher so I LOVE being around children. The fundraiser is to raise funds to support the school. Here is the link to the event that will be held on Saturday, February 7 at the Country Club of Fairfax in Fairfax, Virginia. http://www.rmsmardigras.com/index.cfm

One of the photographs required the students to lay on the ground to form a heart with their hands. What could be sweeter than that? They were laying on cold concrete so I snapped a few pictures and called it a day. I wish that I had some behind-the-scenes images. There was a large patch of sun illuminating half of the students while the other half was in shade. That didn't make for a great picture! Fortunately, my 7 ft. white umbrella saved the day. A parent volunteer held it up to shade the rest of the students while I stood on top of a ladder. We were able to solve the problem and ended up with a really sweet image. It was then sent to Robert Canfield to design the graphics. The second piece consisted of photographing three different groups of students from different classes forming a cross with their hands. Sounds simple enough right? Well, it was a little more challenging than it seemed. First of all, it was a cold winter day so I literally had minutes to take all of the pictures so that we could get the kiddos back into the warm rooms. I laid on the floor to quickly capture the images and the kids did the best that they could to keep their hands together. It was harder than it seemed but they were great sports and were willing participants. Here is the final metal portrait that will be auctioned off. There is something so sweet about the hands of children!
